Good Morning Everyone,
I am new to OH and looking for a little advice. I am scheduled for my Gastric Bypass surgery on Dec 26 and am very excited my only problem is I am having trouble finding protein mixes that either dont have a taste or taste good. I dont drink coffee or pop of any kind so I am really looking for something I can mix with my crystal light or with water. Any know where I can buy anything like that or what to do to make it taste decent I would appreciate all the help I can get.
Thanks

I used beneproten.  It's made by the same people who make benefiber.  You can order on line at Walgreen's.com.  I used to put 2 scoops in my crystal lite drinks.

It took me a LONG time to find something that I liked.  But since I had my RNY surgery,  I CANT stand the SMELL or TASTE of any of it... BUT I am drinking cookies and cream today.... anyhow...

The beneprotein is a great choice, its flavorless,... I would personally go to GNC, they let you sample lots of stuff, give discounts if you ask "can ya do any better on that price for me?"  They always do, and they do have a 100% whey flavorless, but I didn't like it....

My best to you... Its a rough road with the drinks, but its well worth it!!!

Hi Tracey -

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery!  The time is going to fly and the 26th will be here before you know it.

Finding the right protein powder is a HUGE game of experimentation.  There is no such thing as one with no taste.  They make some that is "unflavored" but that only means they didn't add a flavor like vanilla or chocolate... it will still have a taste of its own.

Beneprotein (found behind the pharmacy counter at Walmart) or Ujury both make unflavored protein powder.  But personally... I can't stand the taste of it, so I didn't use it much right after surgery.

Know that your tastes WILL change after surgery, so if you happen to find something that works now, pre-op, don't count on it working afterward.  So don't spend a lot of money on anything just yet.

SAMPLES - the best thing to do is stock up on samples of protein powder.  Just single serving scoops of as many different brands/flavors as you can get ... then just try something different each time after surgery.  I had to try about 4 dozen different flavors/brands before I found a few that I liked enough to buy a whole jar of.

Also remember that the way you mix a protein powder can effect how it tastes.  A single scoop of vanilla can be mixed with water or crystal light or milk or coffee or tea or flavored soy milk or diet juice.  Make it hot or make it cold or add fruit or peanut butter or canned pumpkin or sugar free syrups or add a dash of spice (cinnamon or chia spice are my favs) or as a splash of sugar free coffee creamer.  That single scoop of vanilla can be transformed into dozens of different ways.

I started with the 21-flavor pack from www.enjoyhealth.com and went from there.  There's a list on my profile of online and local resources for where to find protein powder samples.

Hi Tracey,
I would second a lot of what Pam has already written, highlighting that your tastes WILL change post-op (even what you like one month out will likely change a month later, a month after that, etc....... for several months) and experimenting with what you mix the protein with is essential.

Personally, I utilize many s/f syrups.  Some of my favorites are:  vanilla, carmel, peppermint, coconut, almond, and pumpkin spice.  I also use a number of the s/f syrups in creating protein ice creams, which I love.

Here are couple sources for you --

For a great variety of high quality protein samples:  www.vitalady.com
Michelle is a long-term RnY, and is my source for anything nutrition related.

For excellent recipe ideas, including mixing up protein powders & protein ice cream:  theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com
Shelly also had RnY, she works for OH, and is a great source of creative food ideas.

Good luck in your quest for better health!

Welcome to the board! I have tried many kinds and by far I like the brand Unjury. They have a no flavor that works well in crystal light. I also like the chocolate and vanilla. Go to there web site unjury.com. Joan

I'm yet to hear anyone say -- WOW, those protein shakes taste awesome!!!! -- at least at first.
I've had some good ones and one's that I wonder why on earth anyone would make such a vile drink, lol.  Here's the sample kit I went with: http://shop.bariatriceating.com/Protein-Sample-Starter-Kit_p_22-77.html
I'm not a chocolate or vanilla lover so my options became lesser.  There are some good unflavored ones (Unjury is the only one I've had experience with) -- personally I enjoy the Nectar line.
Good luck with everything, it's an exciting time
